“Recalibrating”

My friends and I joke about the GPS voice that says “recalibrating” when we don’t follow her specific instructions. We wonder if it would be better if she sounds more frustrated or annoyed at having to recalculate directions for her recalcitrant driver. But, no, she is steady and patient and will recalibrate as often as necessary to help us get to our destination.

There’s a lesson here. We often (so very often) take a wrong turn on this journey. Either by mistake or because we think we know a better way.

Honestly, there is sometimes beauty in the getting lost — perhaps you discover something you would not have seen if you’d stayed on the prescribed path.

Either way, it’s important to be patient with these tributaries. We may be in it for the journey, but the destination matters, too. There are just so many ways to get there.
